Last Friday, after presenting the interim budget 2019, Finance Minister Piyush Goyal made a huge announcement related to income tax. He said that before the annual income up to Rs. 5 lakhs will be tax-free for individual’s taxpayers.

Keeping this in account 1.50 lakh investment releases allowed an individual taxpayer can save tax on annual income up to Rs 6.5 lakh. The Standard Deduction has also been raised from Rs 40,000 to 50,000.

This announcement received a huge appreciation from the treasury benches in the Lok Sabha, with most of the MPs, thumping their benches. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also seen smiling and thumping the bench. The Lower House chants Modi’s name as the Finance Minister announced the tax proposals.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi was seen sitting with a blank face as the income tax proposals will be seen as populist measures which were announced by the minister. This announcement just came after Rahul had announced that if voted to power in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, they will launch a ‘minimum income guarantee’ scheme for every poor person in the country. This promise sounds to be a ‘game changer’ announcement. For the BJP now, this announcement about income tax will surely reap benefits in the upcoming General Election.
