Fentanyl is a potent opioid that is used as a sedative or a painkiller which plays a major role in the ongoing drug crisis in America. The US has recently sanctioned 25 China-based firms along with individuals who are allegedly involved in the chemical production of fentanyl. Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the supply chain of fentanyl “often starts with chemical companies in China”. In return, China has criticized the decision of the imposition of sanctions and said the crisis of fentanyl was rooted in the US itself.

The Chinese foreign ministry in a recent statement given to the AFP News agency said, “We firmly oppose the United States’ sanction and prosecution against Chinese entities and individuals, and the severe infringement of the lawful rights and interests of the relevant enterprises and persons.” The statement also said, “The Chinese government has been strictly cracking down on drug crimes… and we deploy the harshest control on precursor chemicals. Imposing pressure and sanctions cannot solve the United States’ own problems. It will only create obstacles in the China-US co-operation on drug control.”

This news came after the Chinese government was recently called out by Mexican President Andrés Manuel LópezObrador to help stop the supposed flow of drugs in the country. The sanctions were announced by the US Treasury Department holding a “China-based network responsible for the manufacturing and distribution” of the alleged precursors of other illegal drugs along with fentanyl. Thirteen individuals and twelve entities based in China along with two entities and one individual based in Canada are affected by this sanction. This sanction will also freeze their American assets and restrict Americans from dealing with them. About this new development, Merrick Garland told the reporters, we know that this global fentanyl supply chain, which ends with the deaths of Americans, often starts with chemical companies in China.”
